Professional Standards
I’m a trained medical editor with professional editorial training completed through the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP) and the Publishing Training Centre. My work aligns with the CIEP’s Code of Practice, which sets out recognised standards for professional editorial work.
The Code of Practice is not a legal document, and it does not replace my Terms and Conditions. Instead, it provides a framework for best practice in editing, communication and professional conduct. It supports clear briefing, agreed expectations and effective collaboration – all of which are particularly important in medical, medico-legal and public-health work.
What this means in practice
Working in line with the CIEP Code of Practice means that clients can expect:
-
Clear communication before work begins
-
Agreed scope, deadlines and delivery format
-
Professional handling of confidential material
-
Editing that respects the author’s voice and intent
-
Transparent discussion if scope or timing needs to change
These principles underpin how I work on every project, regardless of size or sector.
Editorial standards
The CIEP Code of Practice provides guidance on best practice across editorial disciplines, including:
-
Copyediting, proofreading and project management
-
Consistent, methodical editorial processes
-
Secure handling of electronic files
-
Professional use of editorial tools and software
-
Appropriate confidentiality and data security
My role is to apply these standards to real-world documents, helping ensure complex medical content is presented clearly, consistently and appropriately for its intended audience.
Professional conduct
Good editorial work relies on trust and mutual understanding. The Code of Practice emphasises:
-
Professional behaviour from both editor and client
-
Respect for agreed terms and deadlines
-
Clear briefing and realistic expectations
-
Open communication throughout a project
These principles support smooth working relationships and reliable outcomes, particularly in high-stakes or time-sensitive projects.
Relationship to my Terms and Conditions
My Terms and Conditions set out the legal and contractual basis of our working relationship, including scope, fees, liability and responsibilities.
This page explains the professional standards that inform how I approach editorial work. It is intended as reassurance rather than contract.
